CARIFTA 2025: 22 athletes set to represent St. Kitts and Nevis

The St. Kitts and Nevis Athletic Association has announced a 22-member squad selected to represent the Federation at the upcoming CARIFTA 2025. As per reports, all the athletes are currently training under the guidance of coaches and mentors for the competition. Event scheduled to held in Trinidad and Tobago from 19th to 21st April, 2025 is a great platform for the young athletes to showcase their skills, abilities and techniques on an international stage. Shedding light on the participation of all these athletes, the St. Kitts and Nevis Athletic Association extended congratulations to them and encouraged them for continuing to pushing their limits. The President of SKN Athletics, Delaney highlighted about the selection of 22 athletes and described it as testament to their hard work, resilience, and passion for the sport. The President congratulated all these athletes and wished them greater success as they are all set to represent the nation with pride and determination.

Joint Statement from the West Indies Players� Association (WIPA) and Cricket West Indies (CWI) on Athlete Safeguarding

The West Indies Players� Association (WIPA) and Cricket West Indies (CWI) are aware of allegations of sexual harassment within the West Indies Women�s team during the 2020 ICC Women�s T20 World Cup, five years ago. Both organizations take such matters seriously and remain fully committed to ensuring a safe, professional, and supportive environment for all players and staff. In light of this, WIPA and CWI will convene to review all aspects of athlete safeguarding within West Indies cricket. This joint effort reflects our commitment to upholding the highest standards of player welfare and ensuring that all safeguarding policies remain robust and effective. Both organizations have already taken significant steps to enhance player protection. In 2021, improved safeguarding measures were introduced for women�s tours, strengthening security and well-being. In May 2023, CWI implemented additional policies, including single-room accommodations for the West Indies Senior Women�s team on all international assignments, ensuring parity with the men�s team. These are among other policy initiatives within the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the period 1 October 2023 to 30 September 2027. Additionally, the CWI Women�s Cricket Transformation Committee was established to further advance women�s cricket Furthermore, we have implemented and strictly adhered to UNICEF�s Children Protection Policy, ensuring that minors never share rooms with adults under any circumstance. Additionally, we have mandated ongoing training for all officials to reinforce and uphold these standards. WIPA and CWI remain committed to fostering a culture of respect, accountability, and professionalism within West Indies cricket. There will be continuous evaluation of all aspects of policy to ensure every player deserves to feel safe, valued, and fully focused on their career. Through this upcoming review, we will continue working to strengthen safeguards and reinforce our unwavering support for all athletes.

Athletics Association confirms postponement of major scholastic meets

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts � After weeks of uncertainty over whether renovations at the Kim Collins Athletics Stadium would be completed in time, St. Kitts-Nevis Athletics has officially postponed the upcoming scholastic championships. With ongoing renovations and concerns about potential weather disruptions, officials relayed the final decision yesterday (Mar. 18) to the media. �The St. Kitts & Nevis Athletics Association (SKN Athletics) regrets to announce that the highly anticipated Rams Inter-Primary School Championship and the TDC Interschool Championships have been postponed until further notice,� the organization stated in a media release. The decision followed consultations with key stakeholders, including the Ministries of Education and Sports in both St. Kitts and Nevis, as well as principals and athletic coordinators from primary and secondary schools across the federation. SKN Athletics noted that despite extensive efforts to finalize a feasible date and secure a suitable venue, critical logistical challenges remain unresolved. The association reaffirmed its commitment to providing young athletes with �a fair and competitive platform to showcase their talents.� �We understand the significance of these even in fostering national pride, athletic development, and school spirit. As such, we continue to work diligently with all relevant parties to confirm a new date and venue that will uphold the integrity and high standards of these championships,� the statement continued. Since the government began upgrading the Bird Rock-based track and field facility, concerns have grown over the length of time required to complete the track. Despite assurances from both the Minister and Permanent Secretary that they hoped for its completion in time for the primary and high school championships, the project is unlikely to meet that timeframe. However, Minister of Sports Samal Duggins recently attributed the delay to inclement weather.

CASTRIES, St. Lucia � CRICKET West Indies (CWI) today (March 18) confirmed the first list of players selected for the regional T20 competition, with both Mikyle and Jeremiah Louis earning spots on the Leeward Islands Thunder squad. In a statement outlining the initial wave of selections and the criteria used, CWI explained that the players were chosen under a "protected players" list, which allows each team to confirm seven players before the official draft. �As per tournament regulations, each team is allowed to protect seven cricketers, with a maximum of three players aged between 27 and 29. The remaining seven players per squad will be selected during the draft, and they must all be 26 years old or younger. Recognizing their importance to the T20 game, CWI has also mandated that one of the protected seven players must be a leg spinner,� CWI said in a media statement. Under the rules agreed upon by CWI and the Caribbean Premier League, the tournament will feature emerging talent with limited professional experience�specifically, players who have participated in fewer than 40 List A T20 matches and fewer than 10 International T20s. The seven players selected for the Leeward Islands Thunder are Jeremiah Louis (28), Mikyle Louis (24), Kacey Carty (27), Kofi James (27), Karima Gore (26), Jewel Andrew (18), and Micah McKenzie (18). The West Indies Breakout League is set to take place from April 25 to May 10, featuring 17 matches, all hosted at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad.

Basseterre, St. Kitts � March 11, 2025 � The St. Kitts and Nevis Commonwealth Games Association (SKNCGA) joins the Commonwealth Sport to announce that the twin-island federation will play a significant role in the historic Commonwealth Sport King�s Baton Relay for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. This groundbreaking initiative was officially launched on Commonwealth Day, March 10, 2025, at Buckingham Palace by His Majesty the King, Patron of Commonwealth Sport. During the ceremony, His Majesty placed a Message to the Commonwealth into the first Baton and pass it to the first Batonbearer, legendary Olympian Sir Chris Hoy, marking the beginning of an inspiring journey with less than 500 days to go until the Opening Ceremony of Glasgow 2026. For the first time in Commonwealth Games history, each of the 74 participating nations and territories will receive their own uniquely crafted Baton, proudly designed and produced in Glasgow. In a departure from previous museum-style designs, the 2026 Batons offer an innovative opportunity for customization, allowing each Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) to decorate their Batons to reflect their national identity, cultural heritage, and artistic vision. These Batons can be painted, carved, or otherwise artistically enhanced by athletes, local artists, or school communities, ensuring a deeply personal and meaningful representation of each nation. The Caribbean has been selected as the first region to welcome The King�s Baton Relay, with the relay officially commencing in Trinidad and Tobago today, March 11, 2025. The Relay will then travel throughout the Caribbean, arriving in St. Kitts and Nevis from Monday, March 17, to Saturday, March 22, 2025.

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts � THE Leeward Islands Hurricanes franchise is placing renewed focus on developing young talent, aiming to raise the standard of cricket across the subregion. The franchise has made noticeable progress over recent seasons, displaying improved competitiveness and greater consistency in both batting and bowling. Their ability to bat for extended periods and bowl with discipline has strengthened, making them a formidable opponent on the regional circuit. Currently competing in the regional four-day tournament, the Hurricanes sit in a competitive fourth place. Over the past two seasons, they have shown they can hold their own against more established teams like the Guyana Harpy Eagles and the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force. During the penultimate round of the competition, the Hurricanes pushed defending champions Guyana, with the Harpy Eagles narrowly escaping with a draw on the final day. Speaking at a recent press conference, all-rounder Jahmar Hamilton addressed the team�s progress despite the challenges faced by the smaller islands within the Leewards, particularly the lack of consistent domestic cricket. �Over the past couple of years, it's all about grooming some of the youths. You know, we have the talent here, but it's just to pinpoint them and give them the opportunity,� Hamilton told SKNVibes Sports. The Anguillan acknowledged the difficulties posed by the region's size and structure but emphasized the franchise�s commitment to long-term development. �So it's been tough, it's been rough, but we've done our best in picking some players who we see can take Leeward Islands cricket further and also to the future�players who have West Indies cricket at heart,� he added. In the penultimate round, the Hurricanes earned first innings points against Guyana. However, the Harpy Eagles bounced back with a second innings total of over 400 runs, forcing a draw after batting until the close of play. Reflecting on that performance, Hamilton said, �I wouldn't really say it went wrong. St Kitts [Warner Park] is a very good batting wicket, and we know it'll be tough to get 20 wickets here.� Despite the challenging pitch, the Hurricanes bowlers managed to restrict the typically free-scoring Guyanese to around 2.5 runs per over. �It was very tough. But we tried our best. Kudos to the bowlers�they created a couple of chances. But it's cricket; chances are going to go down. I felt Guyana had a plan and they stuck to it,� Hamilton noted.
